It’s that time of year again! We’re already seeing ads everywhere, trying to sell you that whole New Year, New You idea. Most of these feature scantily clad bodies, meant to simultaneously make you feel bad about yourself, and motivate you to do something about it.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we have others arguing the fact that we should all adopt a New Year, Same You attitude, and that doing otherwise is ultimately damaging.

But does it have to be?

I mean, you’re going to remain you, that’s unarguable, but if you’re not satisfied with doing the same thing you’ve been doing, isn’t it time to approach things differently?

[ctt template=”3″ link=”ddfU9″ via=”yes” ]There’s nothing wrong with wanting to capitalize on the momentum that we feel to shake things up… but we have to be clever about it![/ctt]

Let’s be realistic here: did you know that up to 60% of people who make New Year’s resolutions abandon them within the first month? The. First. Month. And less than 10% of the people who make resolutions carry them through by the end of the year.

Of course, we could talk until we’re blue in the face about things like lack of willpower, poor commitment and faulty determination, but that reeks of blaming and I’m not into that.

You know what the problem is? It’s not the people making those resolutions, it’s the resolutions themselves!

Do any of these seem familiar?

  • This year I will lose 15 pounds
  • This year I will get 6-pack abs
  • This year I will only eat clean
  • This year I will find a partner

They do to me. Why? Because I’ve made every single one of those in the past… without getting the results I wanted.

See, each and every one of these—just like all the resolutions that we typically see or hear around New Year’s Day—are based on outcomes that are almost impossible to control. They focus on the end result, not the process.

Furthermore, these resolutions are often rooted in feelings of unworthiness, of not being/doing/earning/representing enough. And these have the unfortunate yet common tendency to backfire on us.

As I saw—like we all did—the end of 2016 approaching, I knew it was time for me to act. See, I’ve eschewed this resolution rhetoric for the past few years, and not only has it has impacted me in the best way possible, but I’ve learned SO MUCH in terms of how to transform our outlook to one that serves us every day of the year.

And since I’m not one to keep insight for myself—you might know this by now—I decided to create something brand new, so I could take others along on the ride!
